The odd projections from the ground on page two were inspired from a road trip earlier in the year when my little 20th century car was almost stranded in the Mojave Desert as the alternator was failing. Even as the entire vehicle was going through systematic failure I couldn't help but look in wonder at the alien plants that somehow existed in that region.
My car died just as I coasted into Kingman, AZ. The good people there had me back on the road the next day.
